Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about how doula support works with ESMAH.

Is a doula the same as a midwife?
No. A midwife is a licensed clinical professional: she or he provides medical care during prenatal visits and delivery. A doula is a trained, non-medical companion focused on comfort, advocacy, and continuous emotional support. Many families have both — your doula works alongside your midwife, never instead of them.
Does a doula replace my doctor?
Never. Your doctor, nurse, and midwife remain responsible for your medical care. ESMAH doulas provide non-medical support only: comfort, information, and advocacy, in coordination with your medical team.
When should I start working with a doula?
Most families reach out in the second trimester, which gives us time to build trust and prepare together. But there is no deadline: whenever you feel the need for support, reach out — even close to birth or after it.
What if I have an epidural, or I'm having a planned cesarean?
Every kind of birth is honored. With an epidural, we help you stay comfortable and informed; during a cesarean, we support you — and your partner — before, during, and after. A birth stays a birth, and you stay accompanied.
Does my partner have a place in this?
Yes, always. Your partner stays a full part of the process: the doula's presence frees them from fear, guides their gestures, and lets them stay close and involved. We support the couple, not just the birthing person.
Can I get support in English, French, or Portuguese?
All three. Our team supports families in English, French, and Portuguese. Tell us what you prefer and the doula who joins you will speak your language.
Where do you support families?
Our office is at 23830 Pacific Hwy S, in Kent, WA. Doula support is provided at home, at birth centers, and at your hospital. [Service area — to be provided by ESMAH: tell us where you live and we'll confirm we cover it.]
Does my insurance cover doula care?
[To be provided by ESMAH — coverage varies from plan to plan.] Tell us which insurance you have when you get in touch, and we'll share what we know about coverage for doula care.
How much does doula support cost?
Prices aren't set on this page: [TO BE PROVIDED BY ESMAH]. The first conversation is always free, and we'll follow up with a personalized quote that fits your journey.
Is what we share kept confidential?
Yes. What you tell your doula stays confidential, with the only exceptions being a serious safety concern shared to a professional. Trust is the base of our work — we protect it carefully.
How do I book an ESMAH doula?
Call the office at (206) 502-2056, send an e-mail to contact@esmah.org, or use the contact form. We'll reply quickly to schedule your free first conversation — by phone, video, or at our Kent office.
What happens during the free first conversation?
We listen to where you are, explain how our support works, answer your questions, and see honestly whether we're the right fit. No pressure, no commitment. If we don't fit, we'll help you find someone who does.
