Non-medical notice
This page exists so that no one is confused. Read it once, and everything about what we can — and cannot — do is in plain sight.

What a doula is not
A doula is not a doctor, nurse, or midwife, and is not licensed to practice medicine. ESMAH doulas do not deliver babies, do not perform clinical or physical exams, do not give or handle medication, and do not monitor medical conditions. We never replace your medical team — we work alongside it.
What the support is
Doula support is emotional, practical, and informational: comfort techniques, presence and reassurance, plain-language information about birth, help voicing your preferences, and referrals to qualified professionals.
In an emergency
If you think you or your baby need medical attention — for example high fever, heavy bleeding, strong pain, or decreased fetal movement — do not contact ESMAH: call 911 or your care provider right away.
Not a therapy substitute
A doula is not a mental health provider. If you are going through a difficult moment — after a loss or at any stage of parenting — we can help you find a qualified counselor, and we can stay present while you see them.
